Hermannsburg Potters proudly present Kaltjinthama / kaltjerrama (Teaching/learning), a celebration of Western Aranda intergenerational cultural exchange and lifelong learning. In response to this year’s NAIDOC Week theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy, the exhibition honours the artists’ commitment to both teaching and being taught – a dynamic that continues to strengthen their practice and community.
Featuring work created in workshops with young people and schools, the exhibition showcases how making with clay becomes a powerful tool to pass on stories and cultural knowledge. It also includes new work developed through the artists’ studies at Charles Darwin University. Hermannsburg Potters are masters of their craft who continue to learn with the same openness and curiosity they bring to teaching. The artists’, some of whom are in their 70s and 80s, willingness to expand their knowledge through formal study and new mediums reflecting their ongoing evolution and is a powerful testament to the value of lifelong learning and cultural continuity.
As part of the exhibition, Hermannsburg Potters will launch an updated version of their animation Antala-iperra (Weather), with new voiceover and subtitles in both Western Aranda and English. The animation offers an immersive look at Western Aranda Country across the seasons by depicting the plants, abundant birds, animals, and weather patterns that shape life in the desert. The work provides a glimpse into the artists’ profound knowledge of and connection to Country and a rich resource for cultural and language learning.
