PRISONER LETTER WRITING NIGHT

As of February 2022, half of the population of Alice Springs Correctional Centre have Covid-19. A group of community members meet once a month to write letters to people incarcerated here, and further afield. If you are looking for a way to show your solidarity with those going through the pandemic behind the bars, or are keen on a new pen pal, come along.

One of the (many) ways the prison system beats people down is by isolating them from the rest of the community. Writing letters to people on the inside is a long radical tradition and it's one way we can challenge this isolation - building bridges to those the state has tried to disappear. Letter writing holds an even more important role during the pandemic as visiting hours at most prisons have been reduced.

Whether or not you know anyone on the inside, come on down! Writing together can be a great way to get started and we'll provide a 101 on things to consider, eg. prison regulations. You may just write a one off letter that brightens someone's day, or maybe you'll make a lifelong friend. You can also join on Zoom – so please feel free to join whether or not you are in Mparntwe, using this link.

Paper, envelopes, stamps and addresses of people on the inside who are happy to be written to will be provided.

If you’re able to, please RSVP to wts@wts.org.au
