The Colour of Pomegranates (1969)

dir. Sergei Parajanov
75 minutes

Curated by Chelsea Farquhar

The Colour of Pomegranates is an opulent and intoxicating masterpiece of cinema from avant-garde Armenian auteur Sergei Parajanov. Impressionistic and deeply influential, the film recounts the life of revered 18th century Armenian troubadour Sayat-Nova (Vilen Galstyan) in eight chapters, from childhood to first love to death – from his relationship with his beloved muse (Sofiko Chiaureli) to his miraculous spiritual awakening. Bleeding fruit, roaming cherubs and weeping books abound in this glorious classic.

Combining its dreamlike tableaux with Sayat-Nova’s enthralling verse, The Colour of Pomegranates makes for an entirely original filmgoing experience. Where else can one expect to find floating monasteries, flower-adorned apparitions and jewel-encrusted guardian angels in one place? At once firmly lodged in the past and also far ahead of its time for 1969, this unmissable Soviet treasure is essential viewing for every living person.
