Walk-In Cinema:

ARKAN & IRBELA and Motherhood in the Colony

Curated by Gabi Briggs, current Talk 2 Me Artist in Residence.

Join us for our next iteration of our Walk-in Cinema.

Current artist in residence, Anaiwan woman, Gabi Briggs will be offering her works, GEDYURA (2024)—a woven rifle honouring an unnamed Aboriginal woman's act of frontier resistance on Anaiwan Country—and ARKAN & IRBELA (2024)—a cinematic work sharing coded knowledge and Stories from family history. Her time here as resident has been about really slowing down and just existing in place—an experience of sitting in deep time, where knowledges, Stories, and experiences spiral and return, and where learning happens in cycles, not in straight lines.

As part of this event, we will also be screening Motherhood in the Colony (2025), a Bukjeh X GARUWA Film, in association with Common Ground First Nations - directed by Genevieve Grieves and Aseel Tayah.

In a world shaped by violence and erasure, Motherhood in the Colony brings eight First Nations and Palestinian women together. Through intimate storytelling, the film unravels stories of colonial trauma, and mothering as an act of resistance, while inviting audiences to listen, learn, and envision a future beyond the oppressive structures of colonisation.

Gabi Briggs’ GADYURA will be exhibited in our Pantry space, with remainder of the works presented outside as part of the Walk-in Cinema.

Throughout the night, Gabi will be in conversation with local artist Kirra Voller to discuss their practice and the works shared.
