Improving services for trans & gender diverse people - Workshop by Nic Carson
We are currently amidst the worst anti-trans social panic we've ever experienced, trans & gender diverse people are significantly impacted through increased discrimination, family rejection and transphobic violence. There has never been a better time to reflect on and improve our work in regards to trans & gender diverse people's experiences and needs. This workshop is for people working in health, social services, youth services, education, local & territory government, arts, culture, music, etc, in Mparntwe (Alice Springs), we will cover...
- Trans/gender 101 (informed by an intersectional, structural/systemic analysis)
- Trans experiences of services in town
- Practical how-to activities around meeting the needs of trans & gd people
- Current projects, campaigns, actions by trans & gd people in Mparntwe

This workshop is informed by anti-capitalist, anti-colonial, prison abolitionist and transfeminist methodologies, academic research, and the facilitator's lived experience.
Facilitator: Nic Carson (she/they) is a non-indigenous genderqueer trans femme who loves facilitating spaces for collective learning and mutual understanding, helping us see social structures and dynamics and exploring ways to address inequalities and injustices. She has fifteen years experience facilitating workshops within a range of communities, organisations and institutions. She teaches sociology at RMIT, and has developed and delivered workplace trainings from universities to grassroots community groups. She is a passionate activist for queer and trans liberation, and works to support local campaigns such as Karrinjarla Muwajarri and the Mparntwe Mutual Aid Network. She has lived in town for four years. Nic is part of Vital Collective, a group working towards greater healthcare access for trans & gender diverse people living in the central deserts. She is a founder of Trans Action Narrm, and former National Convenor of the Australian Student Environment Network.
"No one has explained this gender system so well, through group activities and collaborative learning, she gets cisgender people questioning the solidity and fixity of their gender, while holding a space for those of us with lived experience that doesn't pressure us to be doing all the work in these environments." - Serena
"The opposite of stagnant corporate consultation and vapid professional development, this is where useful and liberatory ideas get to breathe and come to life." - Emma
"Nic was professional, kind and gentle, staunch and nuanced, she helped us awaken the knowledge, agency and skills that were already in the group, empowering us to collectively transform things for the better." - Drew
